Jan van der Ploeg

Jan van der Ploeg (b. 1959, Amsterdam) graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam and Croydon College of Art in London and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. In 1990, Jan van der Ploeg was awarded the Royal Award for Modern Painting.

Jan van der Ploeg is known for his abstract paintings rendered on canvas and walls, which were inspired by the neoplasticism and the De Stijl movement. Stripping down painting to its essences of color and form, Van der Ploeg works in black, white, and a palette of brightly hued colors, and with a vocabulary of bold patterns and geometric shapes. Van der Ploeg's use of these forms and patterns creates compositions that seem to be in motion. He began working on walls in the 1990s, and has since completed over 400 murals all over the world.
