3 Dutch Films at Atlanta Jewish Film Festival

From January 24 through February 15, three Dutch films, “An Act of Defiance”, “The Body Collector” and “Playing God”, will be screened at the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival.

An Act of Defiance

Director: Jean van de Velde

A gutsy lawyer risks career and family to defend Nelson Mandela and his inner circle, in AN ACT OF DEFIANCE, a historical thriller set in South Africa’s incendiary segregation era. Mandela and nine other defendants, including Jewish anti-Apartheid fighters, faced a possible death sentence after their arrest during a summer 1963 raid. Sympathetic white Afrikaner lawyer Bram Fischer (Peter Paul Muller), defends the activists against charges of conspiracy
to commit sabotage and treason. As he fights to expose South Africa’s corrupt, unjust system, Fischer attempts to hide his own ties to the resistance. This riveting drama expertly combines nail-biting political and courtroom intrigue to explore South Africa’s seminal struggle against racism, and the little-known Jewish figures who sought to end entrenched discrimination in their country.

The Body Collector

An investigative journalist fights to unmask a prominent art collector as a murderous Nazi war criminal, in the gripping true-life drama THE BODY COLLECTOR. When multimillionaire Pieter Menten (Aus Greidanus) decides to auction off a portion of his prized art holdings, Dutch newspaper editor Hans Knoop (Guy Clemens) receives a tip from an Israeli colleague about Menten’s hidden wartime past. As the mild-mannered but steely and idealistic journalist sets out to uncover the elusive facts, he is warned off the story by fellow reporters, stonewalled by bureaucrats, and threatened by the untouchable Menten and his wife (Carine Crutzen). The
highest-rated miniseries in Dutch television history relives the infamous and intriguing 1970s case, while depicting the heavy personal price paid by journalists in their tireless search for truth and justice.

Playing God

A fixture of America’s most tragic events, the charismatic and controversial lawyer charged with the impossible task of calculating the cost of a human life is the subject of PLAYING GOD.
