Studio Dirk Vander Kooij is renown for creating extraordinary furniture and light fixture by combing its craftsmanship and technical recycling methodologies. Label/Breed stimulates innovation by connecting designers to manufacturers. Both resulting in out-of-the-box design objects like the ENDLESS chair created by a robot arm using recycled plastics from refrigerator parts and the ultra-lightweight FLAX Chair made with natural flax fibers.
Designer-creator-craftsman Dirk Vander Kooij is no stranger to ICFF receiving the award for Best New Designer award in 2013. He has since expanded his collection pieces using his own robot arm that can extrude furniture pieces from 100% recycled material. Colorful tables of melted residual plastics, whimsical high-quality loudspeakers, and funny but durable barstools are just a few examples. The W Hotel recently purchased his eye-catching FresnelLIGHT made from old CD's while commissioning him to create a custom welcome desk with unique light diffusion effects.
Label/Breed innovative design objects range from the Vlisco carpet made with scrap batik fabric from a clothing manufacturer to a 'Carbon Recycled Chair' designer using the Dutch Aeronautic Institute's fiber placement robot. Stijn Roodnat, director of the label, has a passion for the way things are made and believes that the manufacturing industry has the ability to create beautiful things with the help of talented designers for a better world. The collection is continuously growing with surprising, beautiful and award-winning items designed by its talented pool of designers.
These two companies offer solutions to the growing demand for high-quality design products that are thoughtfully made. In addition, they show that there are opportunities for efficiently made products by smart design processes using new and old technologies and techniques.
