Van Hoytema, Temime, Ter Burg and Retel Helmrich join AMPAS

Every year, the organizers of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invite a number of new members to join the award-giving body. This year the Academy invited a record of 322 new artists and filmmakers to join the organization, among which are four Dutch film industry professionals. Cameraman Hoyte van Hoytema (Interstellar, Her), editor Job ter Burg (Borgman, Oorlogswinter), cinematographer and director Leonard Retel Helmrich (Position among the Stars) and costume designer Jany Temime (Gravity, Skyfall) are the chosen ones and will now get to vote for the Oscars.

“Our goal is to recognize filmmaking and talent no matter where you live,” said Boone Isaacs of the Academy in an article of the Hollywood Reporter. “The heart and soul of the motion picture business is here, in Los Angeles, California, which is where we are, but it’s also important for people to understand that we are a global organization,” she added.

Among the new members are Benedict Cumberbatch, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Stone and musicians like Radiohead-guitarist Jonny Greenwood and Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor.

About Hoyte van Hoytema

Hoyte van Hoytema (born 4 October 1971) is a Dutch-Swedish cinematographer who studied at the Polish National Filmschool in Lodz. He has worked primarily in Sweden, but also in Germany, Norway, the United States and the United Kingdom. Hoyte van Hoytema has shot several feature films, documentaries and successful TV series. His collaboration with directors Mikael Marcimain and Tomas Alfredson has won him critical acclaim and a collection of national and international prizes.

About Job ter Burg

With more than 25 feature films under his belt, Job ter Burg is one of the most sought-after film editors in The Netherlands.

Job ter Burg is president of the Netherlands association of Cinema Editors (NCE), which he co-founded. He has organized and moderated lectures by fellow editors like Juliette Welfling, Hervé Schneid, John Ottman, Pernille Bech Christensen, Dan Lebental, Mick Audsley, Alexander Berner and Samuel D. Pollard.

Job is on the advisory board of the Netherlands Film and Television Academy, and is a regular advisor for the Netherlands Film Fund. He has lectured and taught master classes at the  Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam, the Berlinale Talent Campus in Germany, the Rutger Hauer Film Factory in Rotterdam and the School of Visual Arts in New York.

About Leonard Retel Helmrich

Leonard Retel Helmrich is a Dutch cinematographer and film director of Indo descent. He was born the 16th of August 1959 in Tilburg, Netherlands and has lived in Amsterdam since 1982. He received highest honours for international documentaries at the Sundance Festival and was the first two-time International Documentary winner at the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (IDFA).

Helmrich is famous for perfecting the ‘Single Camera Shot’ filming style and his related technical camera innovations. “…you can move inside an event and go with your camera to the right spot, at the right moment,… That’s what the whole single-shot cinema is about: trying to think of the world as a kind of clockwork, a machinery, with everything interrelated. The bigger and smaller things are just as important. In a clockworks you can’t pull out a little gear because the whole thing jams. About Jany Temime

Jany Temime has been the costume designer on Alfonso Cuarón’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Mike Newell’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and David Yates’ Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The latter two films featured Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes of In Bruges.

Ms. Temime has won a Welsh BAFTA Award for her work on Marc Evans’ House of America; was a British Independent Film Award nominee for Mel Smith’s High Heels and Low Lifes; and was honored with a Golden Calf Award at the 1995 Nederlands Film Festival for Marleen Gorris’ Antonia’s Line, which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film.

Her other credits as costume designer include Mike van Diem’s Character, which also won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language Film; Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men; Beeban Kidron’s Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason; Agnieszka Holland’s Copying Beethoven; Todd Komarnicki’s Resistance; Werner Herzog’s Invincible; Marleen Gorris’ The Luzhin Defence; Dick Maas’ The Lift; Paul McGuigan’s Gangster No. 1; and Theu Boermans’ 1,000 Roses, which won the Golden Calf Award for Best Film at the 1994 Nederlands Film Festival.

Ms. Temime’s telefilm credits as costume designer include Theu Boermans’ The Partisans, which brought her a Golden Calf Award at the 1995 Nederlands Film Festival, where the film also was named Best Television Drama.
